ABOUT ME

Hi, My name is David and I play music 😀

A few years ago on my birthday I decided I wanted a banjo. I don’t really remember why. I had never played one before, but for some reason I felt drawn to the idea. That night after work I drove to the music shop with no knowledge of what I was doing and as a result picked out the cheapest, jankiest banjo in existence.

This banjo is barely playable. The neck is warped, it won’t stay in tune, and frets aren’t even spaced right… It’s so bad that I actually have to tune it differently depending on what riff I’m recording. If the riff goes up and down the neck too far I have to play the riff twice, tune differently between each take, and then blend both takes together.

It’s a hilariously bad situation, but for whatever reason my piece of junk banjo continues to inspire me. Maybe this is silly, but part of me thinks this banjo is born from the same place my music comes from. We’re both deeply flawed. I’m not a real banjo player and I wasn’t crafted by the presence of great musicians. My banjo is hardly a real instrument and was poorly mass produced in some factory in another country. Despite our flaws we’ve made “something”, and I’d like to think it’s because of our flaws that this “something” is unique. My music is broken, just like the instruments that create it 🙂
